Use of Elastic Bandage Associated to Speech Therapy in the Control of Sialorrhea in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Abstract

Sialorrhea prevails in 10 to 38% of individuals with cerebral palsy. Among the factors responsible for the Sialorrhea in children with cerebral palsy it is possible to include a deficit of sensation and oral v, labial occlusion and inadequate oral sucking, swallowing incoordination and lack of cervical control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of elastic bandage in control of swallowing of saliva and facial muscle strengthening in children with cerebral palsy. The research was carried out with a 12-yera-old child   in Clínica Saúde em Evidência, in the city of Barra do Garças-MT, male, with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy and complained of Sialorrhea. An anamnesis was carried out with the child’s parents  with questions referring to Sialorrhea and later interview with the therapist who already attended this child for some time  to verify the frequency and severity of this. Eight applications of Taping on the orbicular muscle of the mouth and  the suprahyoid muscle. It was found that there was a significant reduction of sialorrhea, where no longer use towels to dry the dribble and increased the vocabulary,  starting to oralize  simple words with more clarity, in addition to being able to suck in straws of all thicknesses. The Taping  method is effective in improving the control of swallowing of saliva and muscle strengthening in children with cerebral palsy.

Resumo

A sialorreia prevalece em 10 a 38% dos indivíduos com paralisiaa cerebral. Entre os fatores responsáveis pela sialorréia em crianças com paralisia cerebral podemos incluir déficit de sensação e percepção oral, vedamento labial e sucção oral inadequadas, incoordenação da deglutição e falta de controle cervical. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a eficiência da bandagem elástica no controle de deglutição de saliva e fortalecimento muscular facial em crianças com paralisia cerebral. A pesquisa foi realizada com uma criança de 12 anos na clínica Saúde em Evidência, na cidade de Barra do Garças-MT, do sexo masculino, com diagnóstico de paralisia cerebral e queixa de sialorréia. Foi realizado uma anamnese com os pais da criança com perguntas referentes a sialorréia e posteriormente entrevista com a fonoaudióloga que já atendia essa criança há tempos para verificar a frequência e da gravidade dessa. Foram realizadas oito aplicações do Taping no musculo orbicular da boca e no musculo supra-hióideo. Verificou-se que houve significativa redução da sialorréia, onde deixou de usar toalhas para secar a baba e aumentou o vocabulário, passando a oralizar palavras simples com mais clareza, além de conseguir sugar em canudinhos de todas as espessuras. O método Taping é eficaz na melhora do controle de deglutição de saliva e fortalecimento muscular em crianças com paralisia cerebral.
