Influence of Elastic Bandage Applied to the Ankles on the Balance of Patients with Parkinson Disease: Clinical Trial

Abstract

Parkinson Disease (PD) is a progressive degenerative disease of the extrapyramidal system resulting in a decrease in the production of dopamine, leading to a disorder of the movement. The neuromuscular elastic bandage aims to promote and support or external support to the muscles, ligaments and joints, aiding the normal function of tissues, with the intention of correcting the changes of balance and postural stability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the elastic bandage on ankles on the balance of patients with Parkinson disease. 18 patients were included  with medical diagnosis of DP, Hohen Yahr (HY) between 1.5 to 3.0 and Cognitive Screening Test MMSE >24 points. The patients received the technique of elastic bandage (Therapy Tex)  in ankle, bilaterally, for 4 consecutive weeks, associated with conventional physiotherapy. To assess the balance Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest) was used. This study was approved by CEP under no.996.994 and all participants signed the Informed Consent Form (ICF). The group that used the bandage associated to physical therapy was statistically significant (p=0.00087) when compared with the pre-test to the  post-test, and an increase of 15% in the score, with more significant increase compared to postural responses and sensory guidelines. It is possible to  conclude that the use of the elastic bandage applied to the ankles, promoted a significant improvement in the balance of patients with DP, contributing to the improvement of the physiotherapeutic treatment.

A Doença de Parkinson (DP) é uma patologia degenerativa e progressiva do sistema extrapiramidal resultando uma diminuição da produção de dopamina, levando a uma desordem do movimento. A Bandagem elástica neuromuscular que visa promover apoio ou suporte externo para os músculos, ligamentos e articulações, auxiliando a função normal dos tecidos, com a intenção de corrigir as alterações de equilíbrio e estabilidade postural. Objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a efetividade da aplicação da bandagem elástica em tornozelos no equilíbrio de pacientes com doença de Parkinson. Foram incluídos 18 pacientes com diagnóstico médico de DP, Hohen Yahr (HY) entre 1,5 a 3,0 e Teste de rastreio cognitivo MEEM >24 pontos. Os pacientes receberam a técnica de bandagem elástica (Therapy Tex) em tornozelo, bilateralmente, por 4 semanas consecutivas, associado à fisioterapia convencional. Para avaliar o equilíbrio foi utilizado Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest). Este estudo foi aporvado pelo CEP sob o nº996.994 e todos os participantes assinaram o Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido (TCLE). O grupo que utilizou a bandagem associado à fisioterapia obteve diferença estatisticamente significativa (p=0,00087) quando comparado o pré-teste com o pós-teste, e um aumento de 15% no escore, com aumento mais significativo comparado a respostas posturais e orientações sensoriais. Podemos concluir que o uso da bandagem elástica aplicada em tornozelos, promoveu melhora significativa no equilíbrio dos pacientes com DP, colaborando na melhora do tratamento fisioterapêutico.
