The Immediate Effect of the Use of the Elastic Bandage on the Functionality of a Patient after Stroke

Abstract

Depending on the location and extent of cerebral lesions in individuals with cerebral vascular accident (CVA) the clinical symptoms may vary from sensory to motor, or both. The physiotherapeutic treatment should be based on techniques that enable to optimize the sensory and motor aspects in order to facilitate the functional movement. Currently, the use of bandage has been used to facilitate the sending of sensory information, with the aim of improving the motor performance.  The objective was toanalyze the immediate influence of the use of the elastic bandage by Therapy Taping Methods on the functionality of the upper limb affected in an individual with CVA. Type of study: clinical case. One individual with a clinical diagnosis of CVA and incomplete left hemiparesis, attended in the physiotherapy clinic of Unimetrocamp/Wyden. The functionality of the upper limb was assessed by Nine Hole Peg test, and the degree of muscular tonus by Ashworth scale. The the elastic bandage was applied aiming the inhibition to the wrist flexor muscle by the technique in Y. Soon after trunk rotation exercises associated to the reaching and grip practice with the left upper limb were performed. At the end of the therapy the same parameters were evaluated.  In the Nine Hole Peg test, the individual placed initially 2 pins, and after the application of the bandages, 4 pins. In relation to the degree of muscular tonus, this ranged from 1+ to 1. The use of elastic bandage allowed an immediate increase of motor function and may be used continuously in the rehabilitation process.

A depender do local e extensão da lesão cerebral em indivíduos com Acidente Vascular Encefálico (AVE) o quadro clínico pode variar desde sintomas motores a sensitivos, ou ambos. O tratamento fisioterapêutico deve basear-se em técnicas que possibilitam otimizar os aspectos motores e sensitivos de modo a facilitar a movimentação funcional. Atualmente o uso da bandagem tem sido utilizado para facilitar o envio de informações sensoriais com o intuito de melhorar o ato motor.  O objetivo foi analisar a influência imediata do uso da bandagem elástica pelo Método Therapy Taping na funcionalidade do membro superior acometido em um indivíduo com AVE. Tipo de estudo: caso clínico. Selecionou-se um indivíduo com diagnóstico clínico de AVE e hemiparesia incompleta à esquerda, atendido na clínica de fisioterapia da Unimetrocamp/Wyden. A funcionalidade do membro superior foi avaliada pelo teste Nine Hole Peg, e o grau de tônus muscular pela Escala de Ashworth. A seguir foi aplicada a bandagem elástica objetivando a inibição para o músculo flexor de punho pela técnica em Y. Logo após realizou-se exercícios de rotação de tronco associado ao treino de alcance e preensão com membro superior esquerdo. Ao final da terapia os mesmos parâmetros foram avaliados.  No teste Nine Hole Peg, o indivíduo colocou inicialmente 2 pinos, e após a aplicação da bandagem, 4 pinos. Em relação ao grau de tônus muscular, este variou de 1+ para 1. O uso da bandagem elástica permitiu um aumento da função motora imediata, podendo ser utilizada continuamente no processo de reabilitação.
