This study evaluated the effect of a counseling intervention conducted with Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals to reduce sedentary behavior (SB) in users of Family Health Units (FHUs) in the municipality of Rio Grande (RS). The design was a community trial, involving 10 FHUs randomly selected into intervention and control groups, with the participation of adult users residing in the urban area. The intervention combined bi-weekly lectures and text messages sent to professionals, focusing on raising awareness about the risks of SB and strategies for its reduction. Data collection occurred at baseline and six months after the intervention, using validated questionnaires. The results indicated a significant increase in the percentage of users who received counseling for SB reduction, from 8.1% to 29.1%. The average daily time spent in sedentary behavior exceeded five hours, with television use being the most prominent. Adherence to the recommendations was high, with 77.4% of users reporting a reduction in sedentary time. It is concluded that the structured counseling intervention carried out with professionals from the primary health care team proved to be effective in increasing orientation and reducing sedentary behavior among users. The study contributes to evidence-based practice in primary health care and reinforces the importance of the multidisciplinary role in health promotion.
